Sir,
I have laid before the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury Mr. Antrobus' letter of the 23rd ultimo (1714/1908) and its enclosures, relative to a request from the Governor of Hong Kong to be furnished with information with regard to the taxation of certain large towns in the United Kingdom.
In reply I am to transmit herewith, to be laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies, copy of a memorandum, which has been prepared by the Commissioners of Inland Revenue, to supply the information asked for in column 6 of the Schedule forwarded in Mr. Antrobus' letter.
With regard to column 7 of the Schedule, I am to inform you that the total Revenue from Taxes raised by the State in 1906-7 was £128,730,000, or at the average rate of £2, 19.0 per head of the estimated population of the United Kingdom.
I am to add that there are no means of arriving at the average rate per head contributed to Imperial taxation by the inhabitants of the towns specified by the Governor of Hong Kong.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
