With reference to previous correspondence I am di-
rected by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit to you, to be
laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies a
}
copy of a communication from the American Ambassador sug-
gesting that, in accordance with the wishes of the Chin-
ese Government, the date of meeting of the International
Opium Commission should be postponed to February 1st.next,
Sir E. Grey proposes with the concurrence of the
Earl of Crewe to reply to Mr. Reid accepting the sugges-
tion as far as His Majesty's Government are concerned.
The decision in the matter will be at once communi-
cated by this Department to His Majesty's Minister at
Peking, Sir C. Clementi Smith and to Mr. Laidlaw, M.P.
