AFFAIRS OF CHINA.

CONFIDENTIAL.

[34066]

No. 1,

[October 2.]

SECTION 3.

17 NOV 08:

Li Ching-fong to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received October 2.)

Your Excellency,

Chinese Legation, London, October 1, 1908.

REFERRING to previous correspondence on the subject of the appointment of a Chinese Consul in Burmah, I have now the honour to state that I have received telegraphic instructions from the Wai-wu Pu to inform your Excellency that my Government propose, in accordance with the stipulations of Article 13 of the Burmah Convention of the 1st March, 1894, and the Agreement of the 4th February, 1897, forthwith to appoint a Chinese Consul for Rangoon.

While the Consul at Rangoon remains the only Chinese Consul in Burmah, he will have charge, as far as he properly can, of the interests of all Chinese subjects who may be residing in that country permanently or temporarily.

I have, &c.

(Signed) LI CHING-FONG.
