No. 1.

Foreign Office to Home Office.

[October 10.]

SECTION 5,

Sir,

Foreign Office, October 10, 1908.

I AM directed by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to transmit to you herewith a copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Minister at Peking, requesting that he may be supplied with any Acts or Regulations on the subject of the import, sale, &c., of opium and morphia in force in this country. Sir Edward Grey would be much obliged if the Secretary of State for the Home Department would enable him to comply with Sir J. Jordan's request with as little delay as possible, in order that the documents required may reach Peking in time to be of service to the British Delegates on the International Opium Commission, which meets on the 1st January at Shanghae.

I am at the same time to inquire whether any Regulations in regard to opium dens are in force in this country, and the nature of such Regulations if they exist.

I am, &c. (Signed) F. A. CAMPBELL.
