Sir,

I AM directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of the 18th and of the 25th ultimo, with regard to the proposed Joint Commission on Opium.

2. His Lordship concurs in Sir E. Grey's proposed reply to the United States' Ambassador, and has no objection to the date of the meeting of the Commission at Shanghae being fixed for the 1st January.

3. A further communication will be addressed to you later with regard to the selection of a Delegate to represent the Crown Colonies at the Conference.
