Sir:-
On receipt of your despatch No.61(25552) of July 28th I endeavoured to ascertain the whereabouts of the Chinese Kang Yu Wei, but was informed by someone residing in his villa near Stockholm that he was "travelling" and that he might return in the course of a week. No further information was vouchsafed. Being somewhat familiar with the methods of the Chinese, I gathered that this reply might mean that he was touring in this country, or on his way to the East, or else sitting comfortably in his armchair at the villa without any intention of communicating with this Legation, which, he knows, is cognizant of his recent dealings in connection with the young Englishwoman whom it was considered advisable to remove from his influence. I therefore then wrote him a letter asking him to call here.

Sir Edward Grey, Bart.,
