Memorandum relative to Passengers on board s.s. Suisang.

1.

The s.s. Suisang arrived in Saling Cruz from Hong Kong on May 14th last with 618 immigrants on board, of which 114 were allowed to land, leaving the balance unlanded, the reason being, according to the Health Delegate of the Port, that they were suffering from trachoma.

There were also put on board 14 men from the Company's observation barracks, landed from the previous ship, and detained in the barracks, on account of suffering allegedly from trachoma, thus making the total 518 on board. Since then, 5 had escaped ashore, so it makes the actual number 513.

2. Before embarking in Hong Kong, these men were examined and passed by the Assistant Health Officer of the Port, Dr. Grone, to whom Dr. Valenzuela, the Delegate at Saling Cruz, was indebted for lessons on trachoma; and to show that this examination was a rigid one, it is sufficient to
