Thirdly, Dr Licoaga states that persons in Hong Kong, connected with the China Commercial Steamship Company, attempted to suborn Dr Valenzuela, and that, failing this, an attempt was made to poison him. Dr Valenzuela thereupon left Hong Kong and returned to Mexico.

As Sir Hartswell said, it would appear that Dr Valenzuela has acted somewhat harshly towards the Steamship Company, though, as His Excellency remarked, he may be excused for being in some measure biassed against them.
