### SECTION 1.

Sir,

Foreign Office to Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

Foreign Office, June 16, 1908. WITH reference to your letter of the 16th ultimo on the subject of the protection of trade-marks in China, I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to inform you that, as stated in the notice contained in the issue of the Board of Trade Journal of the 10th June, 1906,* to which reference was made in the communication from this Department of the 25th February last, His Majesty's Government are not aware that the voluntary deposit of marks at Shanghae or elsewhere confers any legal status or right on the depositors.

As regards the second point in your letter, I am to say that it is not expected that the negotiations for the conclusion of an Agreement as to the Regulations to be issued by the Chinese Government will make much progress pending the conclusion of a Convention between this country and Japan for the mutual protection of British and Japanese trade-marks in China, the negotiation of which is at present proceeding.

I have, &c. (Signed) F. A. CAMPBELL.

Copy to Board of Trade with references, June 17, 1908.
