With reference to my letter No.222 of the 20th instant forwarding for Your Excellency's information copy of a letter addressed by me to His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General at Canton, relative to the withdrawal of the augmented British patrol from the West River and Canton Delta, I have the honour to inform Your Excellency in continuation, that on the 23rd Instant Mr. Mansfield accompanied by Commander Majendie of His Majesty's Ship "Cadmus", had an interview with His Excellency Viceroy Chang-jen-chun at Canton, the result of which Commander Majendie informs me was very satisfactory, His Excellency giving assurances on the four points referred to in paragraph 2 of my letter to the Consul-General above quoted, his attitude at the interview being very friendly.

I have therefore carried out the promise I made to J. N. Jordan, K.C.M.G., &c., &c.
