With reference to your despatch No.743 of September 17th last, I transmit to you, for your information, a copy of a letter from the Colonial Office enclosing a proposal by the Governor of Hongkong for a mutual undertaking by the Hongkong and Canton Governments not to mint any more subsidiary coins until the Canton and Hongkong coins in circulation have recovered their face-value and then to limit any further issue to what is necessary for currency purposes.

You are authorized to take such steps as you may think advisable, either through His Majesty's Consul General at Canton or, if necessary, by direct communication with the Wei-wu Pu, with a view to effecting,
