propose the Chinese appoint Mr. Jame (a Chinese),

Consulting Engineer instead of Sir John Wolfe Barry and

Mr. A. J. Barry, it will have a most prejudicial effect

upon the prospects of the completion of the Railway

and the character of the undertaking.

We beg leave to add that we have no feeling against

Mr. Jeme personally who we believe to be an honest man

and to the extent of his limited experience a capable

Engineer. We are convinced howaver that his appoint-

ment instead of Sir John Wolfe Barry and Mr. A. J. Barry

would create uneasiness and distrist among the Bond-

holders whose interests we represent.

We trust therefore that Sir E. Grey may see fit to

instruct His Majesty's Minister to press for the ap-

pointment of Sir John Wolfe Barry and Mr. A. J. Barry

and should it be thought expedient to associate Mr.

Jeme with them we should not object to such an arrange-

mant.

We are &c.,

for the British and Chinese Corporation Limited,

W. Keswick,

(Signed)

Chairman.
