NANNING. Please see your telegram No. 140 of the 19th instant.

I have no further development of question to report from here since writing my despatch No. 269 of the 8th June.

I telegraphed to His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton on the 21st instant for a report, and have received the following telegram from him in reply :-

"I have the honour to report that the Taotai still maintains that the city is 'the interior.' He is supported by the Viceroy, with alleged agreement of Wai-wu Pu.

"

My despatch No. 65 of the 19th December, already sent, contains fuller information. Please await its receipt."

When despatch from Consul-General reaches me I shall take further action.
