SHANGHAE incident of 1905.
Peking, November 19, 1907.
Please see my despatch No.398 of the 20th August last.
I have received the following telegram No.45, dated the 18th instant, from His Majesty's Consul-General at Shanghae :-
Secretary of Taotai Jui came to see me to-day by Taotai's instructions to inform me that ex-Taotai Yuan was ready to hand over to me the sum of 50,000 dollars in full settlement of all British claims arising out of the riots of December 1905. I should be glad if you would let me know whether I may receive this sum in settlement of case."
His Majesty's Consul-General considers above-named sum sufficient to meet all British claims, and I strongly recommend its acceptance as a final settlement of the case, in view of the facts that Taotai Yuan has been kept out of office by us for two years, and that our relations at Shanghae have undergone a marked improvement.
