In the figures for 1892 the sterling value of the salary has been arrived at by taking the average value of the dollar during the year (2/9). In those for 1900 the dollar salaries are converted into sterling, half at 2/- (the average exchange of the year) and half at 3/9, in view of the exchange compensation given on one-half of the salary.

In those for 1908, the dollar salaries are converted into sterling at the rate of 3/- to the dollar, (exchange compensation now being given on the whole salary) except in the three cases marked *. In these cases the salaries of the officers at present holding the appointments are fixed in sterling.

In 1892 officers received the actual number of dollars specified in the first column.

In 1900 they received in dollars 50% more than their nominal salaries.

In 1908, in those months in which the average value of the dollar does not fall below 2/- the number of dollars received will be ten times the number of pounds contained in the sterling sums specified in the second column. When the dollar falls below 2/-, the number of dollars received will be that required to provide the equivalent of those sterling sums at a rate of exchange in the manner shown in the body of this letter.
