quested by Lord Crewe, submit our views as based on Mr.
A.J. Barry's report.
In view of the proposed inspection by Mr. A.J.
Barry and referring to the concluding sentence of Bis
Excellency's confidential despatch, we would respectfully
suggest that a telegram be sent to His Excellency requesting
him to take no further steps with regard to Mr. Eves, asking
him at the same time to instruct Mr. Eves to take frequent
and careful observations of all bridges which have shown
signs of settlement, including at least a set of levels and
plumbings at each corner of every abutment and pier, and
borings near each side of every bridge and also 50 yards
on each side distant from the bridgǝs.
We might perhaps remark at this stage that from
the somewhat meagre information at our disposal we are dis-
posed to think that the insertion of a strong arched invert
might possibly meet the case of the bridges which have shown
slight cracks and settlement, or which are on soft ground,
leaving the more important instances of subsidence to ba
dealt with after Mr. A. J. Barry's visit to the Colony.
In conclusion we may perhaps remark that we deeply
regret to learn that ilis Excellency has lost confidence in
the ability of Mr. Eves as Chief Resident Engineer, especially
10.
