value of the area so formed. We have consequently shown,

by green colour, such a reclamation on plan "3", which

if adopted would reduce the width of the northern en

trance to 300 feet, which should be ample to admit of

safe ingress and egress to and from the Harbour, without

at the same time adding to the net cost of the works.

At the south entrance a Jetty, of a length of

450 feet, should be constructed, also as shown by green

colour on plan "B". in continuation of the road leading to

the shore, and abreast of the southern Head of the pro

posed Brealwater, thus reducing the width of the entrance

from 840 feet to 390 feet. The cost of this additional work

would be about 123,000.

Upon the completion of the Harbour a considerable

traffic may be looked for, through the southern entrance

between the new Harbour and the existing anchorage and

the City. The width we have suggested, viz. 390 feet,

should be quite sufficient for such traffic and for the

promotion of circulation within the sheltered area in

order to prevent stagnation and the serious deposit of silt.
