Sewage Disposal. Proposed two Lighters.

Gentlemen,

We are now able to report more fully in reply to your letter of 10th ulto. and beg leave to advise you as

follows:-

It appears from the Dispatch of the Governor of Hong Kong dated 15th April last that the Sanitary Board recommended two and a half years ago the purchase of four capacity each, also of a steam Hopper Barges of 150 tons Launch to tow the Barges to sea with the sewage; and that up to October 1906 the cost of barging the sewage by a hired steam barge was $1500 a month, also that after that date and up to the end of June 1907 the cost of transport was $1300 per month for four junks and $1500 per month for stean barge: or tal monthly cost of $2800 for sea

transport of the sewage.

Also that from the 1st July 1907

up to the present time this cost has been reduced to $2600 per month by abolishing one of the four junks; and this system is expected to remain in force at this cost until the 31st December 1909.

It also appears that a Tender has been received from a Firm in Shanghai for the construction of two Hopper

But the construction Barges at a cost of $48,437 each. proposed being unsatisfactory information was obtained from New York of the practice there and a drawing is submitted of a Steam Lighter to ost approximately $25,000. and the co of running two auch vessels is estimated at $16500 per annum, or of running three at $19,300 per annum,
