I am directed to acknotedge the receipt of
your letter of this date and to inform you in reply that
the Governor-in-Council has not acted in the matter of
recent banishments of certain Chinese without the fullest
enquiry and consideration.
2. I am to remind you that the boycott of
Japanese goods has entailed much loss on merchants and
traders of this Colony who have no wish to join in the boy-
cott and have asked the protection of the Government in
pursuing their peaceful and lawful avocations.
The boy-
cott has further led to riots which have resul ed in the
destruction of much valuable property and even loss of life.
3. The Government has acted to put a termina-
tion to such conditions and it will be obliged to continue
to act unless the organisation which has fostered the hoy-
cott ceases it's operations. On the other hand the
Government has no intention of taking further measures or
proceedings to further banishments if the trade of the
Colony is not further interfered with and the pace is not
again broken.
4. I am to add that the Government is taking
steps to inform representatives of the Chinese Cormunity
accordingly.
A. Cousland,Esq.,
Honorary Secretary,
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
(Sa) F.H.May, Colonial Secretary.
