I have the honour to report that on examination
of the cash box in the Postmaster General's safe in which
the advance to Postmaster General is kept, I found a short- age of $175.88

The late Postmaster General left no account book showe ing the disposition of the money, and it is impossible to
find out anything about it. Mr. Lewis while acting did
not check the amount.
