Hongkong, 17th. December, 1908.

In confirmation of my telegram of

the 10th. instant, I have the honour to transmit to Your

Lordship the enclosed copy of letter from Mr. H. H. J.

Gompertz dated the 9th. instant.

2.

In the event of Mr. Wise retiring

from Government service, I strongly recommend that Mr. T.

Sercombe Smith, at present Puisne Judge in the Straits

Settlements, should be transferred to the vacant post of

Puisne Judge in this Colony.

Should, however, Mr. Smith

not be a candidate for the vacancy, I venture to urge upon

Your Lordship the claims of Mr. Gompertz whose qualifica-

tions are fully set out in my confidential despatch of the

1st. of last October.

It is very desirable that the

Puisne Judge in this Colony should possess a knowledge of

the Chinese language.

In the event of Your Lordship's

selection of Mr. T. Sercombe Smith to succeed Mr. Wise, THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE EARL OF CREWE,
