In the present state of affairs
in the "Near East" it has seemed to me that any effort,
however relatively unimportant, which outlying parts of the
Empire can make to decrease the tension which at present
exists between Great Britain and Austria and Germany cannot
but be useful.
I therefore took the opportunity of at-
tending the reception given by the Austrian Consul General
on the occasion of the 60th. anniversary of the accession
of His Apostolic Majesty to request him to convey my sin-
cere congratulations.
The following telegram has appear-
ed in the Local Press communicated I understand by Herr Von
Wiser, and he personally waited upon me to convey the
Emperor's thanks:-
