received injuries but none serious. About 9 a.m. next morning (Monday) a "ring saloon" in Queen's Road near the Fire Brigade Station was invaded and the goods thrown into the street. Police turned out and made 8 arrests. Police patrols were sent out but nothing further occurred till about 11 a.m. when large mobs appeared in several of the principal streets of the Central District, especially near the Fire Station and the Globe Hotel. Several shops which the crowd seemed bent on attacking were closed and Police pickets posted to protect them. A large crowd made an attack on a shop in Wing Kat Street but the Police charged them and drove them into Des Voeux Road. Stones, bricks, tiles and other missiles were thrown at the Police pickets from time to time but they kept their places. A foreign goods shop in Morrison Street was attacked but the Chief Inspector charged the mob with a party of 6 European Police whom he had in reserve at the Fire Station and drove them off. The same party afterwards charged a large and threatening crowd near the "Land We Live In* Hotel and drove them up into Holly. -wood Road. The Chief Inspector found a coolie lying in Queen's Road suffering from a bullet wound in the buttocks. He was sent to Hospital where he died in the evening. It seems that a picket
-al near the Internation Hotel was hard pressed by the mob and in real danger of being overpowered. E.P.C. Brook fired his revol- -ver in the air 3 times. L.S. Cooper also fired his revolver in the air. An I.P.C. was knocked down and a petty officer from H. M. S. "Alacrity" who had been in the International Hotel and who with some other Naval P.0.s had come to the assistance of the Police, took the I.P.C.'s carbine and fired it off, and it is supposed that it was this shot that wounded the coolie. The latter's name was Chu Lol. The Police Magistrate will I suppose hold an enquiry into the death. One other man, Kong Wing, age 19 of 50, West Street was hit but not seriously injured. After this matters became quieter until the arrival of the troops since when there was no further disturbance. One shop
