14 NOV OR
Supreme Court, Hongkong,
7th. December, 1907.
I have the honour to forward a copy of an
Order of Court varying the periods of the vacation made by me
under the powers conferred on the Chief Justice by Section 11 of
Ordinance 5 of 1898. By the above section rules are subject to
the revision and approval of the Legislative Council. I shall be
glad if a motion for such approval may be made by a member of
the Government and may receive the support of the Government.
The changes have been made after consultation with the Bar and
the Committee of the Law Society and they therefore have been
unanimously approved by the legal profession.
2.
The reason for making the change is the very
arduous nature of Court work during the hot weather, and
experience has shown that relaxation is indispensable and that
it is not possible to obtain it during the very short "Long
Vacation" which is provided by the Ordinance.
3.
I shall esteem it a favour if Your Excel-
-lency will allow a motion to be made at the next sitting of
the Council in order that the new rules may come into operation
before next Christmas.
# Excellency
Sir Frederick Lugard, K.C.I.G., Governor of Hongkong.
I have etc.,
(Sd.) F. T. Piggott,
chief Justice.
