Hon. Colonial Secretary,

I would ask for a reconsideration of this

matter on the following grounds.

During the past few years, Government has

paid several hundred pounds in passages and salaries without any tangible result. Mr. Bird had to be got rid of because he was incapable of doing the work required of him and Mr. Moorson

because he was intractable.

Owing to the above and to the fact that Mr.

Bolton, who was a good Surveyor, was permitted to resign be- -cause he found his salary inadequate and also to sickness anong the staff, the survey work has fallen seriously into arrear.

Of the present Staff, I know that Mr. Darby, who is a good Surveyor and has over 5 years' service, is apply- -ing for employment elsewhere on account of his present salary being, in his opinion, inadequate. Mr. Reed, whose agreement will expire in December next, is willing to remain but has approached ne on the subject of a further advance of salary than the £30 to which he will be entitled if he remains.

The position therefore is that the present

Staff are not contented; Government has paid a lot of money away

in bringing out and sending home again unsatisfactory officers

and the survey work is much in arrear. The last is a very serious matter as the issue of leases is delayed and parties

are seriously inconvenienced thereby.

I would therefore submit that a general

increase be riven to the Survey Staff, with the exception of

Mr. McIntosh, who is not a fully-qualified surveyor, the scales

of pay being altered as follows:-

Principal Land Surveyor

Present. £420 540

Proposed. £450 640

4 Surveyors (Messrs. Darby,

Grey, Reed & Sutton)

300 360

-

330

420

I would propose that each of the above

Officers be riven an immediate increase of £30 per annum and

that
