and as it appeared, at the moment, successful-
to sow dissension between the Solicitors and myself. The
statements he had made in public were inaccurate, and he had
put upon my action in the matter, a wholly unwarrantable in-
-terpretation. The position of the chief Justice was deliberate-
-ly put before the public in the worst possible light. Further,
any impairing of the good relations which must exist between the
Chief Justice and the practitioners of the Court is likely to
be seriously detrimental to the administration of Justice; and,
with all respect and deference to Your Excellency, I am willing,
and desirous if necessary, to justify my action on the highest
possible ground, the performance of a very serions public duty.
As I informed Your Excellency in my last
letter, the result of my letter, which was couched in good-
-huncured banter, was such as I had hoped: the possibility of a
breach between the profession and myself which had resulted
from Mr. Hewett's deplorable action was at once destroyed.
I have no means of rauring the effect

which the expression of Your Excellency's opinion may have on
the Secretary of State, but I imagine that Your Excellency will
agree with me as to the advisability of forwarding this letter
to the Secretary of State in the despatch explanatory of the
cable which is about to be sent.
