In continuation of ry Despatch

Secret of July 23rd., I have the honour to enclose copies

of a letter which I addressed to the Vice-Admiral Corriand-

-ing in China Station and of his reply.

I observed in the third paragraph

of my former Despatch that a Wireless Installation at

Pratas Shoal would be of the utmost importance to the

Observatory here in forecasting typhoons and Admiral

Lambton remarks that this advantage would be shared by the

Navy. The finances of the Colony, however, preclude the

possibility of providing more than a small part of the

expenditure involved. The wireless messages would only be

required during the typhoon season, and if the proposals

of Messrs. Wilkinson and Newman should eventually result in

the establishment on the Atoll of employés of a Company

formed for the exploitation of its natural resources it is

possible that arrangements could be riade with the Company

for
