With further reference to Bridge No. 4, although
agreeing with Mr. Chatham that the safest way is to pull it
down and reconstruct, I think that the bridge might be treated
in the following manner:-
(1). In order to confine the material under the foundations of
piers, drive half-timber sheet piles round the conerate
foundations of both piers and down to the hard. this
sheeting to be tied together by whole timber walings
connected by bolts rurning through pier.
(2). The plera to be weighted with a dead load over and above
the estimated load.
(3). The embankment to be removed from the back of South abut-
-ment, laying bare the top of the foundations.
(4). The concrete foundations of piers and abutments to be tied
together with concrete as shewn in sketch. The portion
cross-hatched to be of the same depth as, and thoroughly tiod in to, existing foundations and to be reinforced with
rails &o.
(6). If necessary two reinforced concrete struts to be thrown
across on each side from piers to walls of central oulvert. (8). The 10-ft. span side arches (from pier to abutment) to be
omitted and girders substituted.
