the existing work should be taken down and that, if possi. in order to obviate the ifficulty and expense of removing the concrete foundations, the roads should be diverted

somewhat to the north of its present position, thus permitting the bridge to be reconstructed on entirely

new foundations. We recommend that, in reconstructing the oridge, the foundations of the abutments and wing

walls should be piled as already recommended in the case

of No. 4. Bridge.

No. 2. This bridge to a short distancs to the north of

No. 7. and is situated in the same valley. It consists of

four 20 foot arch spans, the two central of which provide

:

a passade for a water course whilst the two sidey ones are

occupied by the slopes of the cabankment which will be

about 36 foot high. The bridge is fully completol, bub,

so far, the erbankment has not reached it on either side.

The work throughout to good and up to the present, there

are no algns of settleseat or failurs, From borings se

have taken however, no have ascertained that the hard

ground is about 41 foet bolos original, ground level and

there is reason to apprehcal that, on account of the in-

adequate nature of the foundations, settlement and cracks

will develop. We recommend that the taking of careful

levels be condenced at once and continued periodically.

No. 9. This is a stall bridge of one 15 footeran for a

maternað. It has been completed and in use for temporary

traffic for some considerable time and has shown no sign

of settlosent, The Chief Resident. Rogineer informed us

that it was founded on a good bottom. There is no appa-

rent reason for anticipating any trouble in this case.
