My Lord,
I have the honour to acknowledge
receipt of your Despatch Secret of June 2nd., 1908, with
reference to the Island of Pratas. I caused enquiry to be
made from Mr. M. W. Slade (to whom reference is made in
the correspondence enclosed with your Despatch) and I
attach a copy of two private letters to the Colonial
Secretary from that gentleman (who is one of the leading
Barristers in the Colony). I have not been able to as-
-certain anything regarding Mr. Newman.
2.
Your Lordship will observe from
Mr. Slade's letter that Mr. Wilkinson is closely connected
with German enterprises, and it is possible that Mr.
Newman may be a German (Newmann or Neumann).
3.
The only value which the Pratas
Reef could have for this Government so far as I am aware
apart from strategic reasons which have already been
discussed

THE EARL OF CREVE,
