My Lord,
In reply to paragraph 2 of your
Despatch No. 89 of the 8th. of last May, I have the honour
to inform Your Lordship that the 2 Shroffs in question have
to furnish security to the amount of $10,000 and $5,000
respectively. This they have done for some time past in 2
sureties, one of whom was a Chinese who, on the inspection
of securities of Public Officers held at the beginning of
the year, was rejected as invalid.
2.
The Officers therefore had to
find fresh security in $5,000 and $2,500 respectively. This
they represented would cost them from 3 to 4 per centum if
assured with Chinese. It was ascertained that an European
Assurance Company would charge 2 per centum and
decided, in view of the large security required and the
therefore
comparatively small salaries the Officers are receiving,
to
