His Excellency in his letter? Denier

Justice appears to be under the impression that there has been

a very considerable decrease in the work of the Land Office

during recent years, this however is not the case, in fact the

work has considerably increased. There has been a great cry

amongst the lawyers during the last year or two that there is no

conveyancing going on and as a matter of fact there have been a

for less deeds registered; the number registered during the two

years 1906 and 1907 being only 884 less than the number register-

-ed during the two years 1904 and 1905 or less than 450 per

annum and the number of leases issued have only decreased by

25 during the same period. I find that the Land Office fees for

the past 4 months have exceeded those of the corresponding

period for last year by over $650. The registration of deeds and

grants of Leases does not however form a great portion of the

Land Office work, during the past 2 years the number of C.S.0.

documents dealt with in this Office is nearly 700 in excess of

the previous 2 years and with reference to these documents it is

not usually, as in some departments, simply a question of noting, it frequently means a long search though various documents and

records interviews and correspondence with various people and

probably the drafting of a legal document which cannot be done

in a minute.

A reference to the Blue Book will show that

the area now held under Lease from the Crown is 4,378 A. 2 30

whereas 10 years ago it only amounted to 1,497 A. 3 . 35. The

annual Revenue from Leased lands (excluding New Territories)

amounted in 1907 to $371,167.80 whereas 10 years ago it only

amounted to $241,798.70 an increase of nearly $130,000 and

during the past 4 years there has been an increase in the

annual revenue of over $52,000 from Leased lands. The above

facts alone will show there is a large increase of work in the

Land Office apart from any work in connection with the New Ter-

-ritories which is by no means inconsiderable, papers are sent
