Rev 20 JUN 08,

The Petition of the undersigned members of the Second and third Streets Committees praying for the grant of a plot of

Crown Land on which to erect a Plague Hos-

-pital.

* 10 uke o

During the administration of Sir Henry Blake

His Excellency appointed the petitioners Street Committees. They

rented a house in Third Street to which all poor people infected

with plague were removed for treatment. The object was to give

confidence to the people and to make them willing to report any

cases of plague. Sir Matthew Nathan, the successor of Sir Henry

Blake, the Registrar-General, and the Chinese members of the

Sanitary Board also encouraged the petitioners to continue the

hospital. The people have always been glad to subscribe towards

its expenses as it possesses their confidence. It is however

impossible to establish a permanent hospital in a house that is

only rented, and in addition the house itself is in many respects

unsuitable. They therefore pray the Registrar-General to forward

to His Excellency their petition for a portion of the waste land

at the end of Third Street on which they may erect a Plague

Hospital with their own subscriptions.
