I have had under my consideration
the question of the salary of the Director of Public Works,
a matter which, I believe, my predecessor had intended to
bring to Your Lordship's notice, and I have now the honour
to recommend an increase in the salary of this appointment
on the following grounds:-
The work of the Department, and
the responsibility of its Head have enormously increased
during the last 30 years, as may be seen from the attached
list of the superior staff which has trebled since 1877.
The salary of the Director of Public Works in that year was
£1,200 with £100 travelling allowance equals £1,300. At
the present time the maximum salary is £1,200 with a
travelling allowance of $480 (say £50), Total £1,250.
Mr. Chatham is, however, on a
2.
dollar salary of $7,800 (at 3 shillings) equals £1,170 80
