this purpose. The comparative merits of the schemes were
discussed at a Railway Meeting at which the Colonial
Secretary, the Director of Public Works and the Chief
Resident Engineer were present, and we were all of opinion
that Scheme 3 was the best.

The details of the Scheme are as
The line will curve round the foot of Signal
Hill (War Department Land) involving a resumption of
2,875 Square Feet. No difficulty is anticipated in arrang-
-ing this matter with the Military Authorities. The whole
is not required for present needs, but it is considered
advisable to acquire it at once since it would be in-
-possible to blast the rock at a later date owing to the
traffic on the road. This will admit of curving Des Voeux
Road round into Middle Road with a breadth of 100 feet,
and for the future lines to additional platforms which may
hereafter be required, and which are shown in dotted lines
on the plan attached.
Middle Road will be widened from 50 feet to
a uniform breadth of 100 feet.
