each side of the line and the substitution for it (as the
main East and West artery of traffic) of Middle Road
increased to 100 feet breadth. It also involved the pur-
-chase (as will be seen from the plan) of a great part of
the privately owned Lots 1141, 443, 442 and 618.

The advantages claimed for this
site (apart from the preservation of the deep-sea wharf
and Godown area) were that it was close to the landing
place of the existing Star Ferry Company and to the Govern-
-ment Wharf at the end of Macdonnell Road while two add-
-itional pier-sites would be obtainable at the termini of
Robinson and Garden Roads. The passenger traffic would thus
be amply provided for, and distributed over a variety of
piers, avoiding congestion at any particular one while
#weh-of the Government Piers at Robinson and Garden Roads
(and possibly if found necessary at the basin adjoining
the Water Police Station) would be lucrative sources of
revenue and might be utilised to promote a healthy com-
-petition in the Ferry Service. All these wharves or piers
would be much less subject to the force of the tidal
currents, and would occupy a much more sheltered position,
since any rough weather experienced in the harbour is
generally from an Easterly direction. Finally access by land
