Referring to No. 407 of the rules

and regulations of His Majesty's Colonial Service, I have

the honour to report that I have commuted a sentence of

death passed at the January Criminal Sessions upon a woman

named Lam Kiu to one of penal servitude for life.

It appeared at the trial that the

prisoner deliberately administered poison to one Cheung

Fuk, whose concubine she was, the motive for the act being

apparently that the deceased had two days prior to his

death detected her in an act of unfaithfulness and had

beaten her. After the man was dead the woman took a dose of

the poison apparently with the intention of cormitting

suicide.

The matter came before the Execut-*

-ive Council in the usual course, who were of the opinion

that the case was clearly proven, with the exception of
