H. B. X's. Consulate-General,
Canton, July 24th., 1907.
Referring to Your Excellency's despatch
No. 121 (4244/06) of the 15th, instant, I have the honour to enclose herewith copy of a note from the Vic roy to the effect that it is not peasible for the Provincial Government to agree to cease the coinage of subsidiary coins for a period of five years. The question had, I think, better be left until such time as a substantive Viceroy is a pointed to Canton and even then I am inclined to anticipate that, even if sympathetiɑ, he will only agree to a cessation of the minting of these coins
during the peried of his own tenure of the Viceregal office,
In this way he does not bind his sucessor.
Farticulars as to the fineness and quanti-
-ties of the new Canton Dollars issued or being isaued will
follow shortly.
Excellency the Officer Administering
the Government,
Hongkong.
I have etc.,
(3d.) R. V. Mansfield,
Consul-General.
