Sir,
114
Government House,
Hongkong, 8th. May, 1907.
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of your Despatch No. 51 of the 1st. instant enclosing a copy of
a Despatch from the Viceroy on the subject of subsidiary coinage.
It is observed that the Viceroy proposes te
prevent the importation of Hongkong Subsidiary Coin into Canton
in large quantities and in this regard I should point out that
if such proposal were carried into effect it might be construed
as an unfriendly act towards this Colony so long as no prohibi-
-tien exists against the importation of Cantonese coin into
Fongkong.
On the master of the continuance of minting
small coins at the Canton Mint after the period of three months
has elapsed, I should be glad to learn whether the Viceroy would
agree to a cessation of their issue for a period of five years
if on our part a pledge were riven not to issue any more sub-
-sidiary coins during the same period.
I have the honour therefore to request you
to be so mood as te represent these matters to the Viceroy and
report the result at your convenience.
I have further to enquire particulars of
the fineness of the Now Canton Dollars and of the quantities
in which they are being minted and issued.
I have eto..
(sd.).
