Carneric's letter between this Govern-

-mant and His Britannic Fajesty's

Consul-General at Canton on the subject

of the restriction of the issue of

subsidiary coins (so called) by the

Mint at Canson.

Your Excellency will observe that up to

July last (in which month I arrived here) when representations

in the matter were suspended this Government had failed to

obtain from the Provincial Authorities an undertaking to dism

-continue the manufacture and isaue of subsidiary coins for a

term of years.
