In my Confidential Despatch of
the 22nd. of November I mentioned that Mr. M. H. Logan,
District Engineer, would sever his connection (by resigna-
-tion) with the Railway Works in the current month.

In anticipation of that event the
Chief Resident Engineer recommended, and I approved, the
appointment of Mr. Robert Baker, Assistant Engineer, to
succeed Mr. Logan as District Engineer, on the same salary
and consolidated allowance viz.:- £700 per annum and £200
per annum as Mr. Logan has been drawing; and the renewal of
the agreement of Mr. J. C. Steen, Assistant Engineer,
which expires ir May next, on a salary of £400 per annum
with a consolidated allowance of £100 per annum.

After the above arrangements were
made Mr. Steen's health broke down and it became necessary
to grant him 3 months' leave of absence in order to recruit
his
