II. LANGUAGES OF EASTERN EUROPE AND THE LEVANT.

1. Arabie.-A Lecturer has been recently appointed in "Colloquial Arabic,"

with the special object of training those who intend to work in Egypt,

2. Turkish. The College has two Professors of Turkish. They have no

emolument apart from fees.

3. Modern Greek.]

4. Russian.

5. Armenian.

6. Persian.

Professors have been appointed in each of these subjects.

The same remarks apply as above.

III. AFRICAN LANGUAGES.

1. Hausa. An agreement has been concluded with the Hausa Association by which the College will undertake the teaching of the language in conjunction with that Society, funds being provided jointly by the Hausa Association and the Colonial Office.

2. Swahili.-There is a teacher of this language.

3. Cape Dutch.

4. Zulu.

5. Bantu.

Teachers have been provided in all these languages.

With regard to the teaching of these languages generally, it may be noted -

(1) That as in most cases the number of students will not be large, it is impossible to provide regular teaching unless some income is provided apart from fees.

(2) That the example of the school of Chinese shows that if there are sufficient funds provided to supply adequate and competent teaching, students in considerable numbers may be expected, at any rate in the more important languages.

(3) That as far as can be judged by experience the central situation of King's College is convenient for most students. Many of the students in Chinese are engaged in business, and attend the classes after office hours. other hand, the College is easily accessible from the West End,
