Sir,
March 9th, 1905.
I am requested by the Council of King's College
to forward to you copies of the enclosed Memoranda on the
position of the "School of Oriental and Colonial Languages"
at King's College. The Memoranda will put before you the
necessary facts with regard to the history and present
position of the School, and the purpose of the present letter
is to ask whether the Colonial Office would be prepared to
give assistance to the College for the Support of Teachers in
Languages relevant to their requirements, and whether the
College could make any arrangement for co-operating with the
Colonial Office in the hecessary instruction of Civil Servants
I any point out that an arrangement has been entered
into by the College with the Hausa Association, in which
the Colonial Office has participated, and I am instructed
to suggest that a similar arrangement might bepossible with
regard to Chinese (which is at present subsidised by the
China Association) and other languages used in the Colonies.
I amy add that the Council would be glad of the help and
co-operation of the Colonial Office if it desired to
appoint a representative of the office to serve on any
Committees which might be appointed in connection with
these Chairs.
I am,
Your obedient Servant,
Principal.
