SECTION 1.
Sir J. Jordan to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received September 30.)
(No. 172.) (Telegraphic.) P.
Peking, September 30, 1907. HAVE received a Report from His Majesty's Consul at Kiukiang to the effect that during July and August considerable disorder prevailed, and bands of Boxers were being drilled in Kanchow district in the south of Kiangsi. On the 27th and 29th instant he telegraphed that, according to the latest information, the situation there was critical. All missionary property has been rioted; the English missionary ladies left on the 27th instant, probably for Chi-an, accompanied by Messrs. Hall and Rowe. Messrs. Marshall and Horne are safe, but there is no news of the Meikles at Hsinfeng, Mr. Porteous, who is travelling, or of the Buntings at Wan An, the two former being in the centre of the disturbed area. One Catholic priest has been killed in or near Kanchow.
His Majesty's Consul has telegraphed to the Governor, requesting that effective measures may be taken for the protection of British lives and property, and I have made similar representations to the Wai-wu Pu.
The Kanchow Taotai has done his utmost to suppress the movement, which seems to be of an anti-dynastic and anti-foreign character.
