No. 1.

[October 1.]

SECTION 1.

(No. 35.)

Sir Edward Grey to Sir C. MacDonald.

(Telegraphic.) P.

Foreign Office, October 1, 1907. MUTUAL protection of British and Japanese trade-marks in China. Please refer to my despatches No. 121 of the 31st May, No. 157 of the 30th July, and No. 190 of the 12th ultimo.

The following telegram has been received from His Majesty's Minister at Peking:- "Please refer to your despatch No. 304 of the 30th July, dealing with the question of trade-marks.

"I have again received a request from the Chinese Government to be furnished with a reply regarding the Regulations which have been proposed. How does the question regarding mutual protection stand with Japan? I should be glad to be informed of this, and I am strongly of the opinion that it is inadvisable, pending the conclusion of this Arrangement, to continue negotiations with China on the subject."

Please inform me, therefore, about the present state of the question, and at the same time repeat your reply to this telegram to Sir J. Jordan at Peking.
