SECTION 1,
[32975]
No. 1.
Sir,
Foreign Office to Board of Trade.
Foreign Office, October 5, 1907. WITH reference to the letter from this Office of the 12th ultimo, I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to state that a telegram has been received from His Majesty's Minister at Peking with regard to the question of the protection of British trade-marks in China, reporting that the Chinese Government have again asked for a reply respecting the Regulations which it is proposed they should issue.
Sir J. Jordan considers that, until an arrangement has been made with the Japanese Government, the negotiations with China should not be proceeded with.
The latest report from Tokió states that a Convention has been drafted and submitted to the Japanese Law Officers of the Crown, who are considering it previous to its being laid before the Japanese Government. Every effort is being made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs to expedite matters.
It is proposed, if the Board see no objection, to inform Sir J. Jordan that pending the decision of the Japanese Government on the draft Convention he need not continue the negotiations with the Chinese Government.
