Sir J. Jordan to Sir Edward Grey,-(Received September 9.)

(No. 846.) Sir,

Peking, July 18, 1907. WITH reference to my despatch No. 162 of the 2nd April, I have the honour to report that I have received a despatch from Mr. Fraser, His Majesty's Consul-General at Hankow, stating that the Japanese Consul has informed him officially that the Japanese Consulate has received instructions to start registering ownership of the land situated in the area which extends from the end of the original Japanese Concession, about 1,740 feet northward along the river and about 1,400 feet to the west from the river-bank.

The land situated within the above-mentioned limits has been leased in perpetuity to the Japanese Government, in virtue of an Agreement signed on the 9th February last by the Taotai and the Japanese Consul, and subsequently sanctioned by their respective superiors.

I have, &c. (Signed) J. N. JORDAN,
