Peking, June 27, 1907. WITH reference to my despatches No. 478 of the 15th November, 1906, and No. 260 of the 30th May, 1 have the honour to transmit to you herewith copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Acting Consul-General at Ch'engtu, reporting the arrival of M. Inclosure in No. 1,

Actiug Consul-General Fox to Sir J. Jordan,

(No. 32.) Sir,

Ch'engtu, June 3, 1907. WITH reference to Mr. Goffe's despatch No. 71 A of the 24th October, 1906, reporting the creation of a French Consulate-General at Ch'engtu, and to my despatch No. 25 of the 24th April last, describing the movements of M. Bons d'Anty, I have the honour to inform you that that gentleman arrived here on the 26th ultimo and assumed charge of his post as titular Consul-General for France at Ch'engtu on the 1st instant. M. Bons d'Anty informs me that his title of Consul-General at Ch'engtu is not recognized by the Chinese anthorities in Peking, who, in the passport issued for his recent journey, described him as Consul-General at Chungking. The French Minister is not prepared, I understand, to contest the point.

M. Bons d'Anty's salary is fixed at 35,000 fr. (1,1004) per annum, with an office allowance of 15,000 fr. (600/.) per annum. He has also a grant of 25,000 fr. (1,000/.) for the purchase of a Consulate site at Ch'engtu.

M. Bons d'Anty, who travelled to his post via Hunan (Changsha, Changtê, Chenchou, and Yuan Chou), Kucichou (Chen Yuan, Kuei Yang, and Ta Ting) and Southern Ssuchuan (Sui Yang, Sui Pu, and Kiating), was accompanied on his journey by M. Poirior, his Private Secretary, and Lieutenant Noiret, of the Infantorie Coloniale. The latter is preparing a military report on the journey and a survey of the routes traversed.

Mr. Wilden, Consul Suppléant at Ch'engtu, has been temporarily transferred to Chungking, to take charge of the Vice-Consulate there during the absence on furlough of M. Hauchecorne.

I have, &c,

HARRY H. FOX.
