I have the honour tà report the occurence of a local utbreak at Huang-Kang, a place on the coast some 40 miles N. this, which seems to be regarded with considerable appre- ension by the Authorities here. The first news of this rising is brought to me on the evening of the 23rd inst by the Rev
Lewis, of the American Baptist Mission, who informed me hat he had had to leave Huang-Kang that morning at daybreak Ith his wife and fælly, as fighting had been going on all ght in the town, a band of insurgente having broken in during je night, burnt the Yamens, and killed one or more of the scal officials. From his account I gathered that the mOVE- nt was directed purely against the Authorities, and that he
experienced no difficulty whatever in getting away. As to je actual fac ́s thus reported there appears to be no doubt, It the origin of this disturbance is very variously accounted T. One of the moet probable versions is that two members
a gang of robbers recently operating in the District y of Cheng-Hai, who belonged to the Triad Society, had re- Itly been arrested by a small military mandarin named Ts'ai, t to Huang-Kang for the purpose. To effect their release and of Triad Society men, some 2000 strong had stormed the m, killed the petty official Te'ai, and carried off the other Hcials of the town as prisoners. The insurgents appear to remaining quietly in possession of Huang-Kang, without ing ay further move, and though the neighbouring District
of Jao-Ping and the town of Chao-An are said to have fallen
