-(Communicated

The British and Chinese Corporation to Messrs. Pauling and Co.-(

by Mr. Addis, June 21, 1907.)

Dear Sirs,

22, Abchurch Lane, June 13, 1907. YOUR letter of yesterday's date with the accompanying Memorandum was considered by the Board at their meeting to-day, and I was instructed to inform you that they are entirely in favour of the principle that Chinese railways for which the Corporation may have to issue loans on behalf of the Chinese Government should be constructed by contract, and, further, that such contracts should be carried out by you in preference to others.

The Board, however, are not prepared to enter into any agreement such as is suggested in your Memorandum.

Yours faithfully, (Signed)

A. N. FREWER, Secretary.

Inclosure in No. 1.

Dear Sirs,

Messrs. Pauling and Co. to the British and Chinese Corporation.

Victoria Mansions, 26, Victoria Street, Westminster, S. W.,

June 20, 1907.

WE are in receipt of your letter of the 13th instant, and take due note that you are entirely in favour of the principle that Chinese railways for which the British and Chinese Corporation may have to issue loans on behalf of the Chinese Government should be constructed by contract, and, further, that should such contracts be carried out they shall be given to us in preference to others.

We would ask you to be good enough to communicate the correspondence exchanged between us to the Foreign Office and to His Britannic Majesty's Minister at Peking.

We avail ourselves of this opportunity to thank you for the courtesy extended towards us in these negotiations, and remain, dear Sirs,

Yours faithfully,

(Pauling and Co., Limited)

(Signed) EMIL D'ERLANGER, Chairman.
